Welcome to the Blog for SPEAK PA!

Saving Pets Everywhere through Action and Knowledge

I recently received an email from a friend of mine who was horrified by some information she had just received. An email memo was sent out to police officers in the city of Harrisburg from Harrisburg Police Capt. Annette Books, and instructed officers who found stray dogs to either destroy them, adopt them (without informing anyone), or release them somewhere where they will be safe. Apparently although Harrisburg had finally paid the Human Society their bill for 2011, they had not renewed the contract for 2012. I was appalled! Basically what this meant is that if someone in the area lost their dog, it might be shot or dropped off in some other area where it could starve to death or die from exposure to the elements or sickness.

As a dog lover/owner I am sickened by the actions of Harrisburg city. Not only is it known that in the past they have “destroyed” dogs by shooting them behind the incinerator, but it is also very clear that the lack of care for these poor animals is only about money. They aren’t making this issue a priority, and therefore aren’t budgeting for the funds necessary to deal with the situation. As I continued to think about this situation throughout my day, I started to wonder what I could do. Obviously I cannot run around Harrisburg all day and night looking for stray dogs and bring them home to shield them from the treatment of city police, and I can’t imagine that calling and yelling at them would do any good.

And so (with the help of my wonderful sister Carlene), SPEAK PA was born. My goal is to keep the information flowing. I want people to know what is going on politically, legally, and realistically when it comes to animal law, policies, etc. and I want them to know what they can do about it, while making it as easy as possible for them to do so. I will blog as often as possible to let you know what is going on in PA and what you can do about it. I will do my best to provide the names, addresses, emails, etc. of those people who you may contact to voice your opinion, and I will also make every effort to share your voice when I can. If you would like to write something concerning the issue and have me post it, please feel free to do so. I’ll post it and give you credit or keep you as anonymous as you would like. If you find an article that you are interested in having shared or are just interested in a certain area or topic, please let me know and I will try to get the info out there. If you send a letter or email to a council member, senator, etc. and would like to share it or just have a story that pertains, I’ll be happy to post it! Our email address is SPEAK_PA@yahoo.com and you can follow us on Facebook by searching for SPEAK_PA.
